Heavy MetalHRMS + ICP-MS

Mercury (Hg)

Also known as: Methylmercury · Ethylmercury

Overview

Exists in multiple forms (elemental, inorganic, organic). Methylmercury, the most toxic form, bioaccumulates in the food chain. PBMCs accumulate methylmercury and serve as a reliable indicator of chronic exposure.

Primary Sources

Predatory fish (tuna, swordfish), dental amalgams, coal-fired power plants, certain vaccines (thimerosal).

Health Effects

Neurotoxicity, tremors, cognitive and sensory impairment, immune dysregulation, autoimmune conditions.

Detection Method

This toxin is detected and quantified using HRMS + ICP-MS analysis of isolated PBMCs. The intracellular accumulation of this compound in lymphocytes and monocytes provides a more accurate reflection of chronic systemic burden than conventional serum or urine testing.
