PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate)

Also known as: Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid

Overview

One of the most studied and regulated PFAS compounds. PFOS is highly persistent and bioaccumulates in blood and tissues. Its immunotoxic effects are well-documented.

Primary Sources

Firefighting foams (AFFF), stain-resistant coatings (Scotchgard), contaminated drinking water near military bases.

Health Effects

Immune suppression, thyroid disruption, liver toxicity, developmental effects, classified as a possible human carcinogen.

Detection Method

This toxin is detected and quantified using HRMS (LC or GC) analysis of isolated PBMCs. The intracellular accumulation of this compound in lymphocytes and monocytes provides a more accurate reflection of chronic systemic burden than conventional serum or urine testing.
