PFASHRMS (LC or GC)
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid)
Also known as: C8 · Perfluorooctanoate
Overview
A long-chain PFAS compound with a half-life of approximately 3.5 years in humans. PFOA is a potent immunotoxin that disrupts PBMC function, making intracellular PBMC measurement particularly informative.
Primary Sources
Non-stick cookware (Teflon), food packaging, firefighting foams (AFFF), stain-resistant fabrics.
Health Effects
Thyroid disease, kidney and testicular cancer, immune suppression, elevated cholesterol, developmental toxicity.
Detection Method
This toxin is detected and quantified using HRMS (LC or GC) analysis of isolated PBMCs. The intracellular accumulation of this compound in lymphocytes and monocytes provides a more accurate reflection of chronic systemic burden than conventional serum or urine testing.
